Today I purchased the S n’B Happy Hooker book to teach myself crochet. For the last hour I’ve been trying and trying but am dumb founded. I get the idea slightly but my left hand doesn’t want to move or grip the yarn like they say. I’m supposed to grip with my two last fingers. They open up and let the yarn go when I grab the crochet chain with my middle finger. I went as far as taping my fingers closed but my hand hurt and yarn didn’t flow. Also, my chain stitch v’s aren’t so v-ish. Hmmm. Lordy! I want to learn to crochet! It’s supposed to take like 1/18th the time of knitting, boasting you can finish a project in a night or weekend at most. I’m all for that!
That and I can’t let pretty patterns like these go to waste!

I’m a crochet-er from way back, wish I could help you! As far as holding yarn goes, I hold the for crocheting the same way I hold it for knitting, but in my left hand. Just as for knitting, it doesn’t matter how you hold the yarn, an even tension is key. Keep experimenting.

I think I made single crochet last night. I most definately decreased and/or increased when I shouldn’t have. Thats how I remember it was when I first tried knitting. At this time I feel like I was born knitting how to knit. I forgot that I had to teach myself at one time, not to long ago!
Working single crochet into the first chain stitch is crazy. It’s hard for me to tell the V’s. It’s so much easier after that row!
I’m going to try a little at a time. Like I said, I can’t let those patterns go to waste.

When I crochet I hold the yarn between my left index finger and middle finger and I hook with my right hand. I guess you can try which ever way is comfortable, and don’t worry, give it a break, and when you try it again, you’ll get it. These are lovely vintage patterns.

Rhiannon, I look forward to your crocheted creations if your vintage knitted top is any indication of your creativity, dedication and adoration for the needle arts. I think crocheting is easier, and it’s great for summer! Lightweight, a great hobby for the beach. Say you crochet a 1930s style bathing suit for the beach!

Thanks for your encouragement. I think I am getting the handle (or hook) on crochet. I still am decreasing stitches mindlessly but I think if I just spend all weekend going on with single crochet for a few hours and then double crochet I can master the rest!
Like knitting I’m so anxious to jump into it. There is all this interesting vintage crochet thread on ebay. I want it but don’t know what to buy. Guage on crochet is different than knitting ofcoarse.
Also, I am so used to wood knitting needles Id think that I’d want wood crochet hooks. Seems like the majority of crochet hooks are alum. or steel. Do you think it’s worth getting a huge lot on ebay of mixed sizes? I only have one large hook now.

I am interested in the pink sweater with the black collar and the very pretty sweaters and dress patterns, how do I go about getting these.

I would get the metal crochet hooks. I bought some of those pretty coloured acrylic ones but they don’t go through the loops so easily as my metal ones. I am left handed and taught myself to crochet. I was about 10 and i used a mirror to get the hand positions. I used my Mum’s olld Woolcraft book for the pictures and instructions. I love all these patterns, are they online anywhere? If you need anyhelp then just email me :^)

I would like the first pattern shown in this list. It’s the two color one. I sew and quilt and also knit, crochet and needle tat. I was so excited about finding your website! I’m saving it in my favorites!
