Hello everyone! I know I have neglected this blog for the last year or so. I have finally found some time again to knit. I have taken off time from making doll clothes so I can make clothes for my little baby boy that still lives inside me. In about 20 weeks he should make an appearance! Of course when you are pregnant the pregnancy police come out in full force. My step mom and own mother think that I shouldn’t be knitting for babies as they are allergic to wool. I googled and found little information. I did read that the quality of the wool and softness makes allergies less likely. I knit with cashmere which is a goat, so does that even count? Anyone have any input?
Well anyways, the first thing I knit for baby was a diamond pattern blanket from a 1950’s pattern from the Bear Brand Baby Book, Vol 339. It has a very classic elegant look to it. I thought it appropriate for either gender of baby. I can’t believe a real little baby will be snuggled in this shortly!

This looks lovely. I really enjoyed knitting when I was pregnant. Still remembered the joy it brough me and my baby is 10 today, and I am still knitting for both my boys. Enjoy every minute

Wool is actually a splendid choice for babies. It’s warm, wicks away moisture, and is naturally flame resistant. When acrylic is burned, it melts. Gross.
Congrats on the baby and the blanket is beautiful!

Hello! Congratulations and good work on that beautiful baby blanket. I just started a vintage blankie pattern–seems they really liked that seed stitch border. It’s 100% superwash wool; I use cotton when the parents are allergic to wool or just want something different, but have made plenty of woolen baby gifts.

Congratulations on the exciting news! The blanket is absolutely beautiful. I used to read your blog all the time, so it’s so nice seeing you post again. After seeing how beautiful your 1930s frill blouse was, I went out and bought the pattern (among others) from Iva Rose.

yay, you’re back! And what a fabulous blanket! I have actually never heard about babies being allergic to wool and I have many “organic/all-natural” friends who are young moms (you know, the types who have home births without medication–true dedication I tell you)and I’m sure I would have heard of it from them, especially since I and others have knitted/crocheted stuff for their babies…anyways, that’s my thought…:)

First time reader but perused your site and am excited for more updates. Very excited for your bebe as i just recently had mine 4 months ago. Didn’t knit too many blankets (my mom wanted that job) but did a lot of hats. There’s just something about knitting tiny things! Beautiful blanket!

Hello Rhiannon,
Congratulations on your expected arrival!
I agree with Julie Ann, wool is a wonderful choice for babies. Often when people speak of allergies to wool what they are referring to is really just a sensitivity of the skin. If you use a fine, good quality wool this is minimised. You could also use cotton undergarments on the baby and keep wool for outer garments.
Cashmere, being goat should not have the same difficulties, as you said. Also look at Alpaca, whic is very like cashmere in terms of softness and fineness of gauge.
Best wishes for your babys birth
